Medea is one of the most fascinating yet contradictory characters of Greek mythology. The daughter of Hecate and niece of Circe, she was originally a famous magician who took lives and then spread them anew, presiding over celestial growth and death. The legend of her as a killer of children developed much later. Christa and Gerhard Wolf’s libretto for Georg Katzer’s "Oratoric Scenes for 5 solo vocalists, mixed chorus, and large orchestra" is based on the novel Medea—A Modern Retelling, published by famed German novelist Christa Wolf in 1996.
