With the dearth of commissions for original works by orchestras and other ensembles, modern composers have found a haven in film score writing, and England's John Powell is one of the best. In addition to his credits for Shrek, the Bourne trilogy, Bolt, and X-Men: The Last Stand is his outstanding music for Sean Penn's 2002 film I Am Sam, which also starred Michelle Pfeiffer, Dakota Fanning, and Dianne Wiest. Whether one has seen the movie or not, it is easy to linger over segments like "Starbucks and Hospital," "It's OK, Daddy," "Reading Together," "At the Park," "Kramer v. Kramer," "Torn Away," "Lucy Paints, Sam Makes Origami," and "Nighttime Visits." Powell seamlessly incorporates both traditional orchestral and more modern, synthesized elements. In the opening of I Am Sam, for example, he uses the percussive sounds of table setting as part of the music.
