Cited as "one of the miracles of art history" by Kenneth Clark, the Très Riches Heures marks the zenith of manuscript illumination in late medieval Europe. It was commissioned by Jean, Duc de Berry, early in the 15th century and executed largely by the Limbourg brothers, the master miniature painters who also produced the Belles Heures, though it was not finished until some 75 years later by Jean Colombe. This is a facsimile reprinting of the Très Riches Heures, originally produced by George Braziller in 1969 and long unavailable. Its 139 color plates faithfully reproduce the text and miniatures in their current actual size (the original pages were once larger, and some show the unfortunate effects of over-enthusiastic trimming by various binders throughout the book's colorful history). The provenance and significance of this superb Christian manuscript is discussed in an introduction and preface, and the plates are examined in detail in a commentary section. "The book is a work of astonishing beauty. Its yellowing vellum pages of handwritten text are exquisitely decorated with illuminated capitals and tiny brightly colored miniatures of religious subjects and scenes from 15th-century life. It is universally recognized as one of the two or three finest illuminated medieval manuscripts in existence. 'Incomparable' is how John Plummer, curator of medieval and renaissance manuscripts at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, describes it."—NYTimes
