Shanti Behari Seth was born on the 8th day of the 8th month in the 8th year of the 20th century, and brought up in India in the late years of the Raj. He was sent by his family to 1930s Berlin to study medicine and dentistry, and stayed with the Jewish family of Henny Gerda Caro, who was also born in 1908. When Henny fled the Nazi uprising for England, it was Shanti who met her there. The book tells of his fighting in the war, their marriage in 1951, his return to medicine despite the loss of an arm, and the arrival in the childless couple's lives of Shanti's great-nephew, the teenage Vikram Seth.
