Created by former naval intelligence officer Ian Mackintosh, The Sandbaggers depicted the down and dirty activities of a small SIS (a.k.a. MI6) unit nicknamed "Sandbaggers" whose speciality is shady overseas operations. Its Director of Operations is the paranoid, Machiavellian, and unlucky-in-love Neil Burnside (Roy Marsden), who goes to mind-boggling lengths to do his job (which oftentimes means foiling the Soviets) as he sees fit. This set includes "Always Glad to Help," "A Feasible Solution," "Special Relationship," and "At All Costs." This British television drama about men and women on the front lines of the Cold War also examined the effect of the espionage game on the personal and professional lives of both British and American intelligence specialists. Called "the best spy series in television history" by New York Times critic Terrence Rafferty, this highly regarded program was set contemporaneously with its original broadcasts in 1978 and 1980. An ex-Sandbagger and now Director of Operations for SIS, Burnside is a dedicated professional who lives for his work and who helms the unit with decisive ruthlessness.

"The highlights of most episodes are Burnside's spiky exchanges with Whitehall Minister (and ex-father-in-law) Sir Geoffrey Wellingham (Alan MacNaughton) and encounters with CIA contact Jeff Ross (Bob Sherman), either during park strolls or meals at McDonald's (still a novelty in late 1970s Britain)."British Film Institute
