Description
Neil Burnside (Roy Marsden), the cynical, headstrong chief of a small black ops unit in British Intelligence, must contend with government interference, shrinking resources, and the disapproval of his boss at home—all the while running dangerous missions overseas. If you enjoy the George Smiley novels of John le Carré, then this cerebral spy drama is for you. Episodes include "First Principles," "A Proper Function of Government," "Is Your Journey Really Necessary?" and "The Most Suitable Person." Created by former naval intelligence officer Ian Mackintosh, The Sandbaggers depicted the down and dirty activities of a small SIS (a.k.a. MI6) unit nicknamed "Sandbaggers" whose speciality is shady overseas operations. This British television drama about men and women on the front lines of the Cold War also examined the effect of the espionage game on the personal and professional lives of both British and American intelligence specialists. Called "the best spy series in television history" by New York Times critic Terrence Rafferty, this highly regarded program was set contemporaneously with its original broadcasts in 1978 and 1980. An ex-Sandbagger and now Director of Operations for SIS, Burnside is a dedicated professional who lives for his work and who helms the unit with decisive ruthlessness.

"The Sandbaggers is many things American network television is not: talky and relatively action-free, low in fancy production values but high in plot complexity, and starring characters who aren't likable in the traditional TV way."—LATimes

"The series' trademark [was] complex plotting, vivid characterisation, terse dialogue and dark wit."—British Film Institute
