Description
"I never sing a song the same way twice.... Anything I do sing, it's part of my life." These statements by Billie Holiday are abundantly borne out in these vintage and rare clips. She partners in mutual adoration with Louis Armstrong in "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans" and "The Blues Are Brewing" (from the movie New Orleans), sings "Now Baby or Never" with Count Basie and His Sextet, and mesmerizes with her signature songs "God Bless the Child" and "My Man." Her 1957 rendition of "Fine and Mellow" on the CBS program The Sound of Jazz is legendary, reuniting her with long-time friend Lester Young for the final time. Other musicians who blow magically between the verses include Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Doc Cheatham, Gerry Mulligan, and Coleman Hawkins. During other late 1950s appearances, Holiday sings intimate versions of "Easy to Remember," "What a Little Moonlight Can Do," "Don't Explain," "When Your Lover Has Gone," "Moanin' Low," "I Only Have Eyes for You," "Travelin' Light," "Strange Fruit," "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone," and "I Loves You, Porgy." The first popular jazz singer to move audiences with the intense, personal feeling of classic blues, Billie Holiday changed the art of American song forever.
