Description
Some of the most famous passenger ships of all time—including the Cunard liner Mauretania, the White Star sister ships Olympic and Titanic, and the fast French liner France—are among the ten vessels documented with foldout plans and construction photos in this volume. The book records 41 vessels in total, illustrated with 145 photos, 22 fold-out plans, 41 diagrams and transverse cutaways, five color plates, and a fold-out two-color ad featuring Titanic, with an additional 18 engravings and 40 photos among the other advertisements. First appearing in 1906, The Shipbuilder quarterly was advertised as "the only periodical published in Great Britain which is exclusively devoted to Shipbuilding, Ship-repairing, and Marine Engineering." It set new standards with the quality and accuracy of its fold-out plans, drawings, photographs, color reproductions, and even the clay-coated paper it was printed on, and its reports on the building and launching of particular vessels remain, in many cases, the best if not the only record of these ships. The articles are presented here in context with original illustrated advertisements for everything from Hugh McLean's Semi-Collapsible Life Boats to Brown, Lenox & Co., "experts in moorings."
