With five different films spread over four decades, this set celebrating the red-headed glamourpuss shows the considerable breadth of her movie roles. Lucille Ball played a ruthless chorine in 1940's Dance, Girl, Dance, directed by Dorothy Arzner and co-starring Maureen O'Hara. In 1942's The Big Street (an adaptation of Damon Runyon's story "Little Pinks"), Agnes Moorehead and Eugene Pallette are priceless as supporting characters to showgirl Ball and her faithful swain, Henry Fonda. Ball is glamour personified in the 1943 MGM technicolor musical Du Barry Was a Lady, which includes the Cole Porter song "Friendship." In Critics Choice (1963) Ball plays a housewife who yearns to write a Broadway play—a dream that doesn't sit well with her territorial theater critic husband (Bob Hope). Mame (1974) brought the hit musical about a bohemian free spirit and her protégé nephew from Broadway to the big screen, importing co-star Bea Arthur in the process. (Robert Preston plays southern aristocrat Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside.) Each disc comes with short subjects and a cartoon.
