Description
The combination of superior horseflesh, riveting stories, and megawatt starpower makes these timeless films enduringly appealing. National Velvet (1944) was the making of Elizabeth Taylor; at age 12 she starred in this tale of a girl and her jockey pal (Mickey Rooney) who transform an unruly horse into a champion. The film garnered five Academy Award nominations (including one for Clarence Brown as Best Director) and two Oscars: Anne Revere for Best Supporting Actress (as Velvet's understanding mother) and Robert Kern for Editing. (Kern's work in the climactic race is still considered a classic of film editing.) The superb sequel International Velvet (1978) follows Velvet's niece (Tatum O'Neal) as she becomes a member of the British Olympic equestrian team."Imaginative and stirring" (Washington Times), 1994's Black Beauty was a wondrous adaptation of Anna Sewell's famed novel about a remarkable horse and the owners whose lives he transforms. Barry Fitzgerald and an adult Shirley Temple star in The Story of Seabiscuit (1949), a fictionalized account of the legendary racehorse's training and triumphs; the first movie to bring Seabiscuit's tale to the silver screen, it used real newsreel footage of his races.
