Description
"Great historical writing, perhaps all historical writing, holds a mirror up to two different worlds: the age it sets out to describe, and the age in which it is written," explains Eamon Duffy in his introduction to this volume, a remarkably compact history of Mary Tudor. James Anthony Froude's monumental 12-volume study A History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada was published between 1858 and 1870; his treatment of the reign of Mary I, published in 1860, was the culmination of the six volumes that make up the first half of the History as a whole. The shorter selections of this history offered here illustrate the main themes of Froude's handling of Mary's reign—the illusory optimism of the Catholic Restoration, the cruelty of the persecution of Protestants, and the nature of Cardinal Pole's influence over the queen.
