Description
In 1832 George Catlin made the first of four trips into Indian country, painting what he found in a wonderfully spontaneous if somewhat naive style. A showman and entrepreneur as well as an artist, his ambition was to depict members of every tribe, and though he never reached that goal, Catlin nevertheless achieved a remarkable look into the faces and daily activities of Native Americans before their lands and cultures were radically diminished by America's westward expansion. Seen here in 150 color reproductions and 125 black and white illustrations, Catlin's work belies his preconception of Indians as noble savages, but also reveals his profound respect and affection for his subjects.
