Description
Deported to a concentration camp in 1941, where he remained until the end of the war, Romanian Jewish novelist and cultural critic Norman Manea left his homeland once more in 1986 to escape the brutal Ceausescu regime. Manea now lives in New York, and in this selection of essays he explores the language and psyche of the exiled writer, including astute critiques of fellow Romanian and American writers. Manea—the recipient of such honors as the MacArthur Fellowship, Italy's Nonino International Literary Prize, and France's Prix Médicis Etranger—answers essential questions on censorship and on linguistic roots, and unravels the relationship of the mother tongue to the difficulties of translation. Above all, he describes what homelessness means for the writer.

"Manea demonstrates that he is an indispensable analyst of what it means to be a Romanian, and a Romanian Jew, and a writer, under fascism and communism.... [This book is] an ample offering of his work, his memories, his wise and acute challenges."—New Republic
