Description
In this lively bit of distaff history, William Monter sketches Europe's increasing acceptance of autonomous female rulers between the late Middle Ages and the French Revolution—despite the fact that in their respective societies women held little power or property. Monter surveys the governmental records of some 30 of Europe's women monarchs, both the famous (Mary Stuart, Elizabeth I, Catherine the Great) and the obscure (Charlotte of Cyprus, Isabel Clara Eugenia of the Netherlands), describing how each of them achieved sovereign authority, wielded it, and sometimes abandoned it. He argues that it was the concept of divine right that enabled these female kings to rule without significant political opposition.

"Informative, provocative, and engaging, Monter's study of queens who ruled in their own name illuminates their lives and accomplishments and offers readers rich and intriguing fare."—Kathleen Wellman
