Description
Mozart's last opera—a fantastical mix of earthy comedy and sublime sentiment—was filmed by Kenneth Branagh in 2006, and set on a World War I battlefield. Pamina (Amy Carson), the beautiful daughter of the Queen of the Night (coloratura soprano Lyubov Petrova, who sings atop a tank), has been abducted by Sarastro (René Pape). The Queen inspires the brave Tamino (Joseph Kaiser) to find Pamina, and so he sets off on a quest accompanied by the colorful bird-catcher Papageno (Benjamin Jay Davis). Among the enticements of this re-imagined version are a modern English translation by Stephen Fry, the superb conducting of James Conlon, and the vibrant playing of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

"A huge budget allows for spectacular CGI sequences and Branagh concocts some startlingly inspired ways to accompany Mozart's music in visuals; the Queen of the night's famous aria being one.... Branagh has done a sterling job, full of energy and colour."—BBC

"There's one marvelous moment when the screen fills with a creepy image of singing sandbags warning about fate. But the best parts of the film take place away from the battlefield, as when Papageno, desperate to find a girlfriend, rushes toward a pair of luscious, disembodied red lips. And the scene between Papageno and Papagena, the girl of his dreams, has real charm.... The celebrated bass René Pape, a famous Sarastro, sings this role magnificently, with the profoundest dignity and warmth."—Lloyd Schwartz, NPR
