Description
It is 1964 and Maya Angelou is on her way home in this sixth volume of her original autobiographical series, leaving behind her son to finish his university education in Ghana. In America, the civil rights movement is in full swing, and that's where Angelou wants to be, working alongside her friends Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. Angelou gives us her firsthand experience of this exciting and also tragic political period, and writes of "Jimmy" Baldwin, Eldridge Cleaver, and many other friends, right up to 1968 and the first lines of her first autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Awarded the National Medal of Arts, the Lincoln Medal, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, as well as more than 50 honorary degrees, Angelou has left an indelible impression on American culture and society, largely through her seven volumes of autobiography, her essay collections, and her poetry, plays, and screenplays.
