Description
In this fourth memoir, covering the late 1950s and early 60s, Maya Angelou leaves California with her son Guy for New York City. There she enters the society of black artists and writers, reads her work at the Harlem Writers Guild, and begins to take part in the struggle of black Americans for their rightful place in the world. Her personal life takes an unexpected turn as she falls in love with a South African freedom fighter and travels with him to London and Cairo, where she discovers new opportunities. Here are unforgettable vignettes of figures like Billie Holiday and Malcom X, but perhaps most importantly Angelou chronicles the joys and the burdens of a black mother in America and how the son she has cherished and worked for so devotedly finally grows to be a man. Awarded the National Medal of Arts, the Lincoln Medal, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, as well as more than 50 honorary degrees, Angelou has left an indelible impression on American culture and society, largely through her seven volumes of autobiography (beginning with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings in 1969), her essay collections, and her poetry, plays, and screenplays.

"To say that Angelou is a living legend is in no way an exaggeration. [She is] one of the great voices of contemporary literature."Voice (London)
