These four entertaining mysteries from the 1930s follow Charlie Chan (Warner Oland) on a world tour from London (where a stately English manor harbors a killer among its fox-hunting guests) and Paris (where a suspect seems to have committed three murders at once) to Egypt (where supernatural forces come to the fore) and Shanghai (where Chan finds an opium ring in the land of his ancestors). This highly popular series had superior production values and casts (including Rita Hayworth under her real name of Rita Cansino). A big bonus is Eran Trece a Spanish-language version of the first Chan talkie, Charlie Chan Carries On (the English original remains lost).

"Charlie Chan in London features fine performances from Ray Milland, Alan Mowbray, and E.E. Clive as the dimmest cop this side of Inspector Lestrade. Charlie Chan in Paris was missing for decades.... It features the first appearance of Keye Luke as #1 son Lee. The onscreen chemistry between Oland and Luke is often cited as one of the reasons for the series' popularity. Charlie Chan in Egypt is considered one of the best and most atmospheric of the Chan films. Keye Luke does not appear so sidekick duties are provided by Stepin Fetchit. Charlie Chan in Shanghai is the film with the memorable scene of Oland singing 'Princess Ming Lo Fu' to a group of children.... A fabulous job has been done to restore these titles and they have never looked so good."Home Theater Forum
