"There's nothing like it in all music," said Leonard Bernstein of the opening chorus of Bach's "Great Passion." Its haunting song of lamentation is passed from choir to choir like the solemn ringing of a cathedral bell.

"Ferrier is in glorious voice, and her artistry (technical and expressive) is beyond praise…. The soprano soloist is Irmgard Seefried, and here too is singing of rare quality. Her voice is ideally placed for the music, defined and warm in the middle and lower registers, celestial in the purity of its upper notes. Paul Schöffler sings the Christus with moving generosity and Otto Edelmann copes marvellously well with the high tessitura of his first aria and with the formidably slow tempo. But it could be Walther Ludwig's performance that will most impressively strike listeners today. He sustains the cruelly demanding part of the Evangelist, singing the tenor arias also…. There remains, above all, the singing of Kathleen Ferrier, sublime in the 'Agnus Dei’."—Classic Record Collector
