Description
"He is utterly relentless about music, in the opera and in the concert hall. For him, music is something absolute—intense, spiritual, and altogether personal." That's how conductor William Steinberg characterized his colleague Otto Klemperer—the great exponent of the German–Austrian tradition of the 19th century, to whom the works of Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler were of absorbing interest. These archival recordings can safely be called once-in-a-century events. They include Beethoven's Missa Solemnis (1955) and Ninth Symphony (1960; with Fritz Wunderlich), Mahler's Fourth Symphony (1954) and song cycle Kindertotenlieder (1955) with baritone George London, and Brahms's German Requiem (1956).
