Description
Johann Philipp Kirnberger studied with J.S. Bach in Leipzig (1739–41) and later numbered C.P.E. Bach among his pupils. Kirnberger was a violinist in the Prussian royal chapel in Berlin (1751–54) and subsequently was a member of the chapel of Prince Heinrich of Prussia (1754–58). From 1758 until his death he served Princess Anna Amalia of Prussia. Typical of his choice of unusual or difficult keys is his Sonata for Flute in E Flat Minor, which Henrik Wiese plays "with great sensitivity and panache" in the opinion of American Record Guide—which also considers his playing of a second Kirnberger sonata, in G Minor, "very enjoyable." Other works include a J.S. Bach gamba sonata (BWV 1028), which Wiese transcribed, the Sonata for Flute and Basso Continuo in G Major, HWV 363b/Op. 1 No. 5 by Handel, and a C.P.E. Bach flute and harpsichord sonata (H. 505).

"Wiese has one of the more beautiful flute sounds I have heard; listening to him is pure pleasure…. Effortless playing such as this makes for effortless listening too."— American Record Guide
