Description
Stephanie von Hohenlohe lived a fascinating and controversial life. Born to a middle-class Viennese family and of partly Jewish descent, after marriage to (and divorce from) a prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire she became a close confidante of Nazi leaders Hitler, Goering, Himmler (who declared her an 'honorary Aryan'), and von Ribbentrop. After arriving in London in 1932, she moved in the most exclusive circles, styling herself Princess Stephanie and arranging the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor to Nazi Germany in 1937, as well as being involved in diplomatic intrigue between Lord Halifax and the Nazis in 1938. Most notoriously, she was paid a generous retainer by Lord Rothermere, owner of London's Daily Mail newspaper, an open supporter of the Nazi regime. In 1939 she fled to the United States, and after the U.S. entry into World War II she was arrested by the FBI and interred for the remainder of the war as an enemy alien. Yet after 1945 she began once again, cultivating influential relationships in postwar Germany. Jim Wilson, former director of news for Britain's Anglia Television, uses recently declassified MI5 files and FBI memos to examine what motivated both Stephanie and Rothermere, shedding light on the murky goings-on behind the scenes in Britain, Germany, and America before and during the war.
