Description
Illustrated with more than 300 captioned black and white and color photographs from the collection of the Smithsonian Institute's National Air and Space Museum—many of them dramatic, page-filling images—this visual history of human flight begins with the first inklings of fixed-wing aircraft at the end of the 18th century. It shows and describes the first flights of the Wright Brothers, Glenn Curtiss, Louis Blériot, and Ferdinand von Zeppelin; the leaps of air technology in World Wars I and II; the racers, mail planes, and airliners between the wars; the jet age in commercial aviation; the amazingly powerful aircraft and missiles developed during the Cold War; and today's high-tech fighters, supersonic airliners, and unmanned reconnaissance vehicles. The book includes a section of cutaway blueprint drawings of the warplanes Spitfire, B-17F, Me-262, F-86E, and B-52G, as well as the Constellation and Concorde airliners.
