Description
On July 18, 1947, American journalist Ruth Gruber stood on a wharf in Haifa as the Exodus 1947 limped into the harbor carrying more than 4500 Holocaust survivors, having been rammed and boarded by sailors of the British Navy to stop her desperate passengers from seeking refuge in Palestine. Gruber ultimately spent several months following the exiles from port to port on the Mediterranean. Her riveting dispatches and photos informed the world of their plight, and arguably influenced the United Nations to create the state of Israel. This revised and expanded version of her book Destination Palestine—which inspired Leon Uris's novel Exodus—features 100 of Gruber's photos by the author, a new opening chapter, and updates on the fates of some of the passengers.

"One of the outstanding books to emerge from World War II. It should be in every Jewish library."—Leon Uris
