Description
Outspoken and quick-witted, idealistic and adventurous, Margaret Fuller (1810–1850) was perhaps the most famous American woman of her generation, assays John Matteson—winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for the biography of Louisa May and Bronson Alcott, Eden's Outcasts. Fuller was the leading woman of Concord's transcendentalists, wrote literary and social commentary for Horace Greeley's New York Tribune, and served as that paper's first female foreign correspondent. She also wrote a groundbreaking and influential work of American feminism, Woman in the Nineteenth Century, and joined the fight for Italian independence—but when she, her lover Giovanni Ossoli, and their child were lost in a shipwreck on Fire Island, her promising unfinished works were lost as well.

"Psychologically rich ... Matteson's book restores the heroism of [Fuller's] life and work."—The New Yorker

"A real-life bodice ripper.... Fuller's story is a gripping one, worthy of a romance novel or Merchant-Ivory film ... [in this] readable and meticulously researched biography."—SFChronicle
