Ferdinand Columbus, son of Christopher Columbus and author of the first published account of a voyage to the New World, was also the owner of one of the largest private libraries and most important early collection of prints assembled during the Italian Renaissance. Although the collection was dispersed long ago, Mark McDonald has reproduced about half of it, using a detailed inventory found in Seville. With 178 black and white illustrations and 20 more in color, this beautiful book catalogs 110 of the most significant prints in Columbus's collection while discussing his life and work and explaining how the reconstruction of his collection has transformed our understanding of the print industry in Renaissance Europe.
