Set on Dartmoor in England's West Country, The Hound of the Baskervilles tells the story of an attempted murder inspired by a family's legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound that haunts the moors. This 19th adaptation of the classic tale by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is distinctive in that Richard Roxburgh (as Sherlock Holmes) and Ian Hart (as Dr Watson) are virile men in the prime of life, as originally portrayed in print by their creator. (All the better to engage with the fearsome, monstrous Hound!) Among the stellar actors in this 2002 teleplay (scripted by Allan Cubitt, who adapted the BBC's Anna Karenina) are Geraldine James, John Nettles, and Richard E. Grant.

"The Hound of the Baskervilles involves a family curse dating from the 17th century, when Hugo Baskerville, suspecting that his wife is cheating, savagely beats her in a jealous rage. She flees across the moor, but he follows and kills her. Hugo also meets his end—his throat ripped out by his wife's devoted hound. The hellhound has plagued the Baskervilles ever after. And in this production, state-of-the-art computer-generated special effects provide a hound worthy of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's gothic imagination…. First published in 1901, 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' was a crowd-pleaser concocted by Conan Doyle to resurrect his hero Holmes, whom he had killed off eight years earlier in a story in which Holmes plunges into Reichenbach Falls with his archenemy, Moriarty."—Washington Post
