Show creators John Cleese and Connie Booth kept their immensely popular sitcom to a dozen episodes to maintain its quality, guaranteeing viewers side-splitting laughs from soup to nuts. Fawlty Towers goes out with a bang in "Waldorf Salad," "The Kipper and the Corpse," "The Anniversary," and "Basil the Rat." Can the BBC be faulted for hubris in declaring Fawlty Towers to be "the greatest sitcom of all time"? If hordes of fans are any measure, they must be right! Running from 1975 to 1979 for an immortal 12 episodes, the BBC comedy Fawlty Towers was named Britain's greatest TV show of the 20th Century in a television industry poll conducted in 2000 by the British Film Institute. Both program and star John Cleese were BAFTA winners in 1976 and 1980 for a comedy that was praised far and wide for its comedic virtues, including its "impeccable wit, on-the-dot slapstick timing, and meticulous setups" (Minneapolis Star Tribune).

"The Sistine Chapel of sitcoms."—Entertainment Weekly

"There's some particularly good writing in the last three episodes, 'The Kipper and the Corpse', 'The Anniversary' and 'Basil the Rat', which are larger in scale than the rest of the series. Most of the other episodes follow a pattern, in which Basil is trying to hide some sort of disaster from someone else (his hotel's inadequacy, a drunk chef, racetrack winnings, etc.), and these last three episodes are no different, but they introduce additional layers that subtly change the angle of the comedy…. [There was] plenty of top-notch writing, sharp dialogue and brilliant physical comedy packed into its short run."—Tyler Foster, DVDTalk
