Description
In 1904, Karl Straube published an edition of pieces by Bach, Walther, Pachelbel, Buxtehude, and others that adapted them to the organ's modern capabilities. In performing these works, Andreas Sieling gives us an authentic look at the interpretation of Baroque organ music at the beginning of the 20th century. They include Muffat's Passacaglia in G Major; Buxtehude's Passacaglia in D Minor, BuxWV 161, Praeludium in F Sharp Minor, BuxWV 146, and Ciacona in C Minor, BuxWV 159; Pachelbel's Toccata in F Major (II), T. 242, Ciacona in D Minor (Dorian mode), T. 204, and Chorale Prelude "Vater unser im Himmelreich" (II), T. 62; Muffat's Toccata No. 6 (from Apparatus musico-organisticus, Part 1), and more.

"Straube in effect orchestrated the organ works of the Baroque composers for the more versatile tonal resources of larger pipe organs—such as the one used for these recordings: the 1905 Sauer-Orgel in the Berlin Cathedral. This is a very big organ, and MDG has achieved an appropriate very big sound with it. The lowest pipes will rattle one's surroundings, and the dynamic range of some of the works is much greater than one usually hears in organ works. The various voices in the contrapuntal works are more strongly brought out and the construction of the work made more understandable."—Audiophile Audition
