Description
With gentle humor and a gift for candid portraiture, spinster sisters Rose and Emma Windmill chronicled everyday life in Victoria, Australia, in the first half of the 20th century. Although the meticulous Windmills eventually amassed more than 1,000 negatives, they entertained few ambitions for their work and their pictures were soon forgotten. Peter Elliston's aunt was a friend of the family, and he was given carte blanche to unearth this time capsule of life a century ago. More than 90 of the Windmills' duotone photographs appear here—some as large as 9 x 11 inches—along with Elliston's biographical sketch of the sisters and excerpts from their letters.
