Description
When Rodney Crowell hit Nashville in 1972, he was befriended by two of its finest songwriters, Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. "Having listened to Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and Hank Williams, I understood the gravity of the songs Townes and Guy were writing. I wanted to write songs that would hold up to theirs." In 1988's Diamonds and Dirt, Crowell became the first country artist to chart five No. 1 singles from one album. Tarpaper Sky comes fast on the heels of Old Yellow Moon, his Grammy-winning collaboration with Emmylou Harris and the Americana Music Association's 2013 Album of the Year. Another signature Crowell blend of country, folk, and roots music, its 11 tracks include "The Long Journey Home," "Fever on the Bayou," "Frankie Please," "God I'm Missing You," "Famous Last Words of a Fool in Love," "Somebody's Shadow," "Grandma Loved That Old Man," "Jesus Talk to Mama," "I Wouldn't Be Me Without You," "The Flyboy & The Kid," and "Oh What a Beautiful World."

"In addition to becoming a top-notch writer, Crowell proved himself a formidable musician, playing guitar in Harris' famed 'Hot Band' during its peak years, from 1975 to 1977. He was instrumental in broadening Harris' sound and vision, adding intricate, Beatlesesque melodies to her honky-tonk soul."Charleston Gazette
