Description
At one time there were 14,000 covered bridges in the United States; fewer than 900 are still standing, scattered largely across states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, and Georgia. This book surveys 13 of these bridges in more than 100 black and white photos and as many more architectural drawings and plans, from Indiana's Bells Ford Bridge, which before its collapse in 1999 was the longest combination Post truss bridge in the country, to the Brown Bridge in Vermont, featuring Town lattice truss construction and still in use today. Here too are additional color photos revealing the beauty of some of the bridges in their surrounding landscape, and GPS coordinates for many of the locations described. These architectural marvels have been extensively documented by the Historic American Building Survey (HABS) and the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER). Revealing the sophisticated designs and advanced structural features of these buildings, the book is detailed enough to satisfy the modeler, artist, or builder, as well as the enthusiast.
