Description
The great Bruno Walter was hailed by Dutch critics as "Mahler's apostle" when he first picked up the baton to conduct the "Titan" symphony in 1923. This disc combines two live recordings from 1947, of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 and Brahms's Schicksalslied ("Song of Destiny"), Op. 54, for choir and orchestra. The latter is considered, with the exception of his German Requiem, to be Brahms's greatest choral work. In his book on the composer, Josef Sittard asserts, "Had Brahms never written anything but this one work, it would alone have sufficed to rank him with the best masters." The piece is an orchestrally accompanied setting of a poem by Friedrich Hölderlin. Musicologist W.H. Hadow praises the work for "its technical beauties, its rounded symmetry of balance and charm of melody, and its marvelous cadences where chord melts into chord like colour into colour."
