Description
Although Orson Welles's timeless masterwork was ranked Number One in the American Film Institute's 1998 list of best American movies, the 1941 film won just a single Oscar, for Welles's and Herman Mankiewicz's original screenplay, which was based on the life of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. In addition to a beautifully restored and remastered version of the classic film itself, this three-disc ultimate collector's edition includes the documentary The Battle Over Citizen Kane, an examination of the power struggle between Welles and Hearst, which was nominated for an Academy Award (Best Documentary Feature) in 1996, and 1999's RKO 281, a fictional look at the troubles that beset the production. RKO 281, which took its title from Citizen Kane's original production number, stars Liev Schreiber, who was nominated for Golden Globe and Emmy awards for his performance as Welles, and James Cromwell (also nominated for an Emmy) as Hearst; it won the Golden Globe Award for Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV. In addition to those mentioned, RKO 281 received 11 Emmy Award nominations, and won for Outstanding Casting for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special; Outstanding Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special; and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Miniseries or a Movie. This boxed set also includes ten reproductions of studio memos and correspondence; a reproduction of the 20-page souvenir program from 1941; a 48-page book with photos, storyboards, and behind-the-scenes info; and five lobby card reproductions.
