"Before there were Dead Heads, Trekkies, and even Beatlemaniacs, there were Kentonites," writes All About Jazz of this iconoclastic bandleader. "Sixty years ago, Stan Kenton put the musical world on notice that he was going to add his signature sound to American popular music, and pop/jazz fans have been rabidly divided on his merits, akin to the Tories and Loyalists." This set collects his LPs City of Glass, (1951), This Modern World (1953), Contemporary Concepts (1955), Kenton in Hi-Fi (1956), and Cuban Fire (1956).

"'City of Glass' and 'This Modern World' … still sound extremely advanced. A large string section is employed on the former while the latter features Maynard Ferguson's screaming trumpet on two of the six movements…. Contemporary Concepts features six veteran standards (all arranged by Bill Holman) ["What's New," "Stella by Starlight," "Stompin' at the Savoy," "Yesterdays," "Cherokee," and "I've Got You Under My Skin"] and Gerry Mulligan's 'Limelight' (with a chart from its composer)…. The music swings well, with drummer Mel Lewis pushing the rhythm section and such talented soloists as altoists Charlie Mariano and Lennie Niehaus…. A seamless mix of dazzling charts and liberal doses of Lunceford and Ellington-inspired swing … certainly works on Kenton in Hi-Fi. Old hits like 'Eager Beaver' and 'Artistry in Boogie' sparkle in the warm glow of '50s stereo technology, while fiery renditions of 'Lover' and 'The Peanut Vendor' show the famous muscle of the Kenton band…. Cuban Fire is a six-part suite … by Johnny Richards. The Kenton orchestra was expanded to 27 pieces for these dates including six percussionists, two French horns and six trumpets. With such soloists as tenor-great Lucky Thompson (on 'Fuego Cubano') … and plenty of raging ensembles, this is one of Stan Kenton's more memorable concept albums of the 1950s."—All Music Guide
