Description
Glenn Close won an Obie in 1982 for her role as a woman who passes as a man for economic survival in 1890s Ireland. She and Irish novelist John Banville co-wrote the screenplay for this film adaptation, which is based on George Moore's novella. Close and co-star Janet McTeer (whom the San Francisco Chronicle called "wonderfully inspired and vital") both garnered 2011 Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for their gender-bending performances.

"A friendship with housepainter Hubert Page (Janet McTeer), also deploying an F-to-M masquerade but enjoying a not-so-celibate life with a seamstress spouse, convinces lonely, pence-pinching Albert to pursue his dream of petite bourgeois propriety: Opening a tobacco shop and trying to persuade a pretty hotel co-worker (Mia Wasikowska) to be his bride."Village Voice

"An enchanting and beautiful movie."Elle

"Brilliant.... A jaw-dropping performance by Glenn Close."Newsweek

"A powerhouse performance."New York Post

"The production design, costumes, cinematography and art direction of the film, set in 19th-century Dublin, are top-notch."USA Today
