Description
A boy hero of World War II—awarded the French Croix de Guerre with Silver Star and the American Medal of Freedom—Stephen Grady was an octogenarian when he finally gave us this memoir of his coming of age in occupied France. Living a few miles from Ypres, where his English father helped maintain the "gardens of stone" that were the graves of World War I soldiers, and unable to escape the advancing Germans, 14-year-old Stephen collected souvenirs from crashed Messerschmitts, until he was arrested and imprisoned for sabotage. Upon his release, and still only 16, he was recruited by the French Resistance and, under the constant threat of betrayal, learned the arts of clandestine warfare, including how to kill.

"An extraordinary memoir of the journey to manhood unfolding against a backdrop of terror, destruction and stark tragedy. At times charmingly whimsical, at times almost unbearably poignant, Gardens of Stone is the best book I have read about the struggle of 70 years ago—and its haunting legacy—bar none."—Tim Collins
