Description
The centenary year of British composer Benjamin Britten (19131976) sparked a number of celebratory offerings, including this exemplary collection. Featuring Britten as conductor on many pieces, it is remarkable in that all of the selections are complete works (except for the frequently excerpted orchestral music from his opera Peter Grimes). On CD 1 are The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, Op. 34; Simple Symphony, Op. 4; Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, Op. 10; and Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes, Op. 33 (capturing the atmosphere of his beloved East Anglia). CD 2 has the sublime Ceremony of Carols, Op. 28, from King's College; A boy was born, Op. 3 (another set of carols); and Hymn to St. Cecilia, Op. 27. CD 3 offers Songs from "Friday Afternoons", Op. 7 and Noye's Fludde, Op. 59 (The Chester Miracle Play set to music), while CD 4 has Les Illuminations, Op. 18 (a song cycle with tenor Peter Pears set to the poetry of Rimbaud); Serenade for Tenor, Horn & Strings, Op. 31 (with Pears, Barry Tuckwell, and the London Symphony); and the Violin Concerto, Op. 15 with Janine Jansen. "Not since Henry Purcell in the 17th century has England produced a composer whose reputation is truly international," writes musicologist James Jolly in the liner notes. "With so much of his music Britten could be original, indeed unique, yet at the same time work within a language that goes straight to the emotional core of his listeners."
