Description
The inspiration for the multiple Oscar and Golden Globe Award–winning motion picture by British director Steve McQueen and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, this is the memoir of Solomon Northup, a black man born free in upstate New York who was drugged, beaten, and sold in the slave markets of Washington D.C. in 1841. Northup, who saw himself as a free, educated, and independent man with a family and a profession, provides an eloquent account with unique insights, in which he describes being kidnapped and plunged into a vicious system designed to eradicate identity and individual rights. After 12 years of servitude—including beatings, debasements, and attempts to kill him—he was able to escape only when a sympathetic contractor risked his own life to get a letter to Northup's wife in New York. This edition, edited by Henry Louis Gates Jr., includes an introduction by Bancroft and Frederick Douglass Book Prize–winning historian Ira Berlin and a foreword by McQueen.
