Description
Best known for its recordings of the great Chicago blues artists Elmore James ("It Hurts Me Too"), Junior Wells ("Messing with the Kid"), Magic Sam ("My Love Is Your Love"), and Earl Hooker ("Blues in D Natural"), the independent record label Chief (along with its subsidiary Age) operated from 1957 to 1964 with a diverse roster that also included R&B artists like Lillian Offitt ("Shine On"; "Will My Man Be Home Tonight") and Ricky Allen ("Cut You A-Loose"; "You'd Better Be Sure"). Hooker in particular appeared on more than 60 titles, a dozen of which were released under his own name. Among them were several slide-guitar instrumentals, including the 1961 Age single "Blue Guitar" (on which Muddy Waters later overdubbed a vocal, calling it "You Shook Me"). Other tracks among the 36 selections include G. "Davy" Crockett's soul-blues "Did You Ever Love Somebody," Bobby & Lucy's equally soulful "It's Nothing," A.C. Reed's "I Stay Mad," Frank Butler's "I Can't Believe It," Reggie "Guitar" Boyd's "Nothing But Poison," Sonny Lantz's "Blues for Sonny," and the Hooker/Wells collaboration "Universal Rock."
