Description
Beginning in 1748, when Franklin was known in Pennsylvania as clerk of the Pennsylvania Assembly and in the Middle Colonies as the printer and editor of Poor Richard's Almanac and the Pennsylvania Gazette, this third volume of The Life of Benjamin Franklin tells the story of his transformation into a figure known throughout the colonies and the international scientific community. By the middle of 1757, where this volume ends, Franklin was famous as a public-spirited citizen and soldier in the conflicts of the Seven Years' War; as a writer, politician, and key theorist and patriot of the American empire; and as a pioneering natural philosopher. Leading Franklin scholar Leo Lamay saw published the first two books of his proposed seven-volume biography before his death in 2008; the third was released posthumously the following year. Together, they take Franklin from his birth in 1706 Boston through his 50th year, as he is sent to England to advocate for Pennsylvania.
