Description
Not only was Dave Van Ronk (1936–2002) one of the founding figures of New York City's 1960s folk music scene—a pioneer of modern acoustic blues, a fine songwriter, a powerful singer, and an influential guitarist—he was also a musical historian, a marvelous storyteller, and one of the most quotable characters of Greenwich Village. This posthumous memoir, compiled by his longtime friend Elijah Wald from Van Ronk's many interviews and stories, provided much of the inspiration and atmosphere for the Coen Brothers' film Inside Llewyn Davis. Van Ronk—a double Grammy nominee and the recipient of an ASCAP Lifetime Achievement Award—gives us his colorful, hilarious, engaging take on the Village folk scene, including encounters with figures like Woody Guthrie and Odetta and then-unknowns like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell.

"Van Ronk is a fine raconteur, writing the compelling story of his slow rise to cult folksinger status and near superstardom without an iota of pretension. His anecdotes of rumrunners, mountebanks, and beatniks are often hilarious.... The great virtue of this memoir ... is the capsule prose snapshots of about a dozen blues-folk greats including Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Brownie McGhee, Sonny Terry, and Lead Belly.... There are many lively vignettes in this memoir ... but the charm of The Mayor of MacDougal Street lies in its unvarnished simplicity—just like that of its author."—Boston Globe
