Description
"With her sultry glance, husky voice and brash, no-nonsense attitude, Lauren Bacall proved that a woman could be a man's equal and pal yet still be sexy" (TCM Profile). The late Bacall sauntered on the scene in 1944's To Have and Have Not, bagged Humphrey Bogart, and the rest is Hollywood history. In 1947's Dark Passage Humphrey Bogart plays a man falsely imprisoned for his wife's murder; when he escapes, Bacall's character helps him search for the real killer. A returning veteran (Bogart) tangles with a ruthless gangster (Edward G. Robinson) during a hurricane in John Huston's claustrophobic Key Largo of 1948; Lionel Barrymore, Claire Trevor (who won an Academy Award for her role), and Bacall all have juicy parts. Bacall plays opposite John Wayne in William Wellman's harrowing Blood Alley (1955). He's a sailor who breaks out of a Chinese jail and dodges Communist agents on the road to Hong Kong; she's a fellow American whose physician father has been detained in China for his medical knowledge. And in Vincente Minnelli's Oscar-winning Designing Woman (1957), (winning for Best Writing, Story and Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen) Bacall harkens back to her early days as a high fashion model. She's a sophisticated New York designer and Gregory Peck is her sportwriter husband, whom she marries after a whirlwind romance on the West Coast. Complications arise, difference abound Ö and sparks fly!
