Description
Arguably the definitive American movie about greed and paranoia, filmmaker John Huston's 1948 masterwork ranks No. 30 on the AFI's list of all-time greatest American movies and won three Academy Awards: one for John's father Walter as a grizzled prospector and two for John (Best Director and Best Screenplay, adapted from B. Traven's novel). Though unnominated, Humphrey Bogart delivers one of his most memorable performances as the down-on-his-luck Fred C. Dobbs. A young and uncredited Robert Blake plays a Mexican boy whose lucky lottery ticket kick-starts the plot. Bonus materials on this two-disc special edition include a feature on the movie's making and John Huston's career; the classic Looney Tunes Short 8 Ball Bunny starring Bugs Bunny, which delights us with a now-legendary riff on Sierra Madre; and an April 18, 1949 Lux Radio Theater broadcast of the film, with Bogart and Huston re-creating their screen roles. This edition also includes a feature-length commentary by Eric Lax, co-author of Bogart Warner Night at the Movies, which is introduced by Leonard Maltin and features a Key Largo theatrical trailer, a newsreel, the comedy short subject So You Want to Be a Detective, and another Bugs Bunny Merrie Melodies cartoon, Hot Cross Bunny.
