Robert Aldrich followed up his smash horror film What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? three films later with another potent genre work: the 1967 war action film, The Dirty Dozen. U.S. Army Major John Reisman (Lee Marvin) is assigned 12 convicted murderers to train and lead into a mass assassination mission of German officers in World War II. Among a strong group of his peers (Donald Sutherland and Jim Brown, e.g.), John Cassavetes stood out, being nominated for both Oscar and Golden Globe as Best Supporting Actor. (The film won an Oscar for Best Sound Effects.) This two-disc special edition includes a bonus movie, the 1985 sequel The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission, with Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, and Richard Jaeckel reprising their original roles; Marine Corps Combat Leadership Skills, a vintage recruitment documentary featuring Marvin; two documentaries, Armed and Deadly: The Making of The Dirty Dozen and The Filthy Thirteen: Real Stories from Behind the Lines; a vintage featurette, Operation Dirty Dozen; and commentary by cast members Jim Brown, Trini Lopez, Stuart Cooper, and Colin Maitland, as well as producer Kenneth Human, original novelist E.M. Nathanson, film historian David J. Schow, and veteran military advisor to movies Dale Dye.

"The mission to France certainly generates plenty of excitement as this host of heavyweights blast through the enemy. But as the film progresses it is watching the various members of the dozen redeeming themselves in some way that is one of the film's strengths when compared to other gung-ho efforts."BBC
