In her second outing (after 2011's international bestseller The Hypnotist) Stockholm Detective Inspector Joona Linna investigates the death of a woman found on an abandoned pleasure boat, her lungs filled with water but with no other signs of drowning. When a man's corpse is discovered at his apartment the following day, it looks like suicide by hanging, but Joona notices some discrepancies and begins to suspect a connection between the two cases.
