Description
In the winter of 194445, the Red Army was massing on the border of Germany's easternmost province, East Prussia. Two and a half million inhabitants were desperate to flee, but the Fuehrer had ordered them to stay and fight to the last. Also trapped, with their breeders and owners, were thousands of Trakehner horses, bred over centuries as mounts for the Prussian cavalry and coveted by horsemen around the world. Only after they were surrounded by the Soviets could the Prussians finally flee, and the only escape was across a frozen lagoon on the Baltic coast. Former foreign correspondent Patricia Clough describes their flight, which only a few hundred horses survived, and the painstaking attempts to rebuild the breed in the face of further hardships.
