Description
As three pregnant women from different backgrounds wait to have their babies in a hospital in Stockholm at the outbreak of the Great War, they relive their childhood and youthful experiences via individual flashbacks. "It is full of corrective truth," film critic Kenneth Tynan wrote of Mai Zetterling's 1964 feature film debut. "In sheer narrative technique, Loving Couples is one of the most ambitious debuts since Citizen Kane." Based on The Misses von Pahlen, a masterpiece of Swedish literature by Agnes von Krusenstjerna, it was banned at the Cannes Film Festival for its sexual explicitness and nudity. This DVD also includes Zetterling's short film The War Game (1962), winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and an essay that she wrote on filming Loving Couples. In Swedish with English subtitles.

"It's by turns bawdy in its humor, bitter in its portrait and extremely earnest in the relationships between men and women."New York Post

"A fascinating film. Stunning, frank, bold and beautiful. Has much of the moods of Bergman [and] a Fellini-like fascination."World Journal Tribune
