Description
Written between 1819 and 1823 and based on a waltz by Anton Diabelli, the 33 variations of Op. 120 stand alongside Bach's Goldberg Variations as two consummate peaks of variations for keyboard. Musicologist Donald Tovey called Beethoven's harmonically advanced work "the greatest set of variations ever written," while pianist Alfred Brendel described it as "the greatest of all piano works." It is performed by Jan Michiels, who was awarded first prize in piano at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels and was a winner at the 1991 Queen Elisabeth Competition. As a bonus, additional variations by Schubert, Hummel, Czerny, and Liszt are included as well.

"What a perfect technical mastery, what a physical power, what a breathttaking musicality!"—De Standaard, Belgium

"The variety of treatment is almost without parallel, so that the work represents a book of advanced studies in Beethoven's manner of expression and his use of the keyboard, as well as a monumental work in its own right."—Martin Cooper, Beethoven: The Last Decade
