Description
Selections from Bach's nearly 200 chorale preludes and chorale arrangements have rarely been interpreted on viola and piano. On this recording, Hariolf Schlichtig and pianist Yumi Sekiya perform several of these familiar works (Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 645; O Mensch, bewein' dein Sunde, BWV 622; and Nun komm', der Heiden Heiland, BWV 659), as well as the three beautiful gamba sonatas from Köthen (BWV 1027, 1028, and 1029).

"Schlichtig's tone is warm and nicely rounded; he plays with spot-on intonation, clear articulation, and brings a welcome straightforward interpretation…. Sekiya's touch is gentle and elegant, and always right in step with Schlichtig's pacing."—All Music Guide

"Schlichtig is a bold player with a rich vibrant sound, and he is not hesitant to dig into the strings with a lot of heft and pull when the spirit strikes him. Pianist Yumi Sekiya likewise is not shy in projecting the fullest and warmest of piano tones…. MD&G has done a good job here of bagging the duo in lovely, warm, and resonant surround sound."—Audiophile Audition
